Terms of Service
These Terms of Service ("Terms") apply to your use of CHESSPLUSONE.COM (the "Site"). By opening and playing on the Site, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Site.
This is a general set of terms for a small, independent project — it isn't a substitute for legal advice, and if you need something more formal for your own purposes, please consult a lawyer.
The Service
CHESSPLUSONE.COM is a free chess variant played on an 8-column by 9-row board. No account, sign-up, or payment is required to play. The Site is provided by Asakura Tetsuo Folco.
Acceptable Use
Please use the Site fairly. In particular, don't:
- attempt to disrupt, overload, or interfere with the Site, its online multiplayer rooms, or the systems behind them;
- attempt to access another player's game, or another visitor's data, beyond the normal spectating feature described below;
- use automated tools to scrape, flood, or abuse the Site's API or its multiplayer/room system;
- use the Site for anything unlawful.
We may restrict or block access for anyone who doesn't follow these Terms.
Online Multiplayer & Spectating
Online multiplayer connects two players directly to each other (peer-to-peer); we don't guarantee connection quality, and a game can be interrupted by either player's own network. A newly created room that nobody joins within three minutes closes automatically. If a connection drops afterward, the game itself isn't lost as long as whoever created the room keeps their tab open — the other player can reconnect with the same room code and continue from where things left off.
Anyone who joins a room after the two players are already connected is treated as a read-only spectator: a spectator can watch the moves as they happen but can never move a piece, offer or claim a draw, resign, reset, or undo — on the Site or through any other means.
Because room codes can be used to spectate a game in progress (including via the world map on the homepage), don't share information from a game you're spectating in a way that would let someone gain an unfair advantage in that same game.
AI Opponents
The "Player vs AI" and "AI vs AI" modes are played against automated software, not a human being. Difficulty and playing style vary by the level you select and may change as the Site is improved.
Saving and Loading Games
Save Game downloads a game to a file on your own device; Load Game reads such a file back in. Both happen entirely inside your browser — we never receive, store, or have access to these files. You're responsible for keeping your own saved games; we have no way to recover one that's lost, corrupted, or deleted.
Donations
The Site includes an optional way to support the project financially through Ko-fi, a third-party platform. Donations are voluntary and non-refundable, and are subject to Ko-fi's own terms — we don't process or store your payment details ourselves.
Intellectual Property
The rules of chess itself are, of course, not owned by anyone. The specific 8×9 board variant, the CHESSPLUSONE and CHESSPLUSONE TELEPATHY names, and the Site's own code, design, and content are created by Asakura Tetsuo Folco (built together with Claude, Anthropic's AI) and may not be copied or reused without permission.
Privacy
What little data the Site collects, and why, is explained separately in the Privacy Policy & Cookies page, which forms part of these Terms.
No Warranty
The Site is provided "as is," without any warranty of any kind. We don't guarantee it will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Asakura Tetsuo Folco is not liable for any damages or losses arising from your use of — or inability to use — the Site.
Changes
These Terms, and the Site itself, may change over time. Meaningful changes to these Terms will be reflected here, along with an updated date below.
